Damian Lewis’ Song of the Week: Down on the Bowery

“One stand-out highlight comes in ‘Down On The Bowery’, which effortlessly shows out the capability of Lewis’ voice and his commitment to the craft.” – Rolling Stone UK

Fan Fun’s Damian Lewis’ “Song of the Week” series has been getting a lot of love from the fandom — thank you all for the enthusiasm and support! If you missed any of the previous “Song of the Week” posts, you can catch up here.

This week, we’re diving into Damian Lewis’ first single, Down on the Bowery. Damian has shared what he intended with his debut album Mission Creep as follows:

“I wanted the album to give a sense of a journey to this point, from busking ‘til now. I suddenly had a lot to say. People will judge if it’s any good or not, but for me, it felt entirely natural.”

In chronological storytelling, Mission Creep takes us on a journey through Damian’s life and relationships. It begins with his busking years in Zaragoza, capturing the raw beginnings of his musical path. Then comes his first meeting with Helen in Soho Tango, and a song about her personality in Little One. The album also explores her dreams, as in Wanna Grow Old, reflecting her hope of growing old together in Paris. Later, Damian gets into loss and grief, with songs like Hole in My Roof, Makin’ Plans, and She Comes — each offering a deeply personal look at heartache and remembrance. Throwback Thursday to Damian Lewis at The Tabernacle London

“Jazz is a broad church. That’s why we chose a Tabernacle. Place of residence. Place of meeting. Tent of congregation. Tent of meeting.”

-Damian Lewis

Well, ladies and gentlemen, exactly three years ago, I had a 72-hour lightning trip to London for a special weekend with fan friends and a fantastic evening of music at The Tabernacle London in Notting Hill with the one and only Damian Lewis. It was such a night with our Ginger Elvis rocking on the stage and off – he made time for everyone, VIPs and fans alike, after the gig.So please come join me in the beautiful and inspiring  music hall that is The Tabernacle London, and live or re-live (if you were lucky  enough to be there) every single detail from that glorious evening… And don’t get surprised that I am talking about A Spy Among Friends and The Radleys as Damian’s upcoming projects. They were upcoming projects three years ago and I haven’t changed a word in my original write-up .

Throwback Thursday to Damian Lewis at London Sheep Drive

More than a thousand Freemen of the City usher their sheep along a historic trading route once every year to celebrate their medieval right to bring produce to market over the Thames without paying tolls. And Damian was right there, too, last year to use his medieval right!

Shepherd-for-the-day, Damian Lewis wore his grandfather’s wool coat from First World War and carried a shepherd’s crook as he herded the animals over Southwark Bridge in homage to a centuries-old tradition and in what he described as an “eccentric, very British, day.” Continue reading “Throwback Thursday to Damian Lewis at London Sheep Drive”

Throwback Thursday to Damian Lewis at Boisdale of Canary Wharf

“A Damian Lewis live show contains fun. Rock’n’Roll. Good music. And an amazing band that I play with.” — Damian Lewis at Latitude Festival Press Day

Yes, sir! All those coupled with a truly engaged and energetic crowd at Boisdale of Canary Wharf made my 48 hour lightning trip to London exactly a year ago more than worth it! Now I am going back to that very day and living it all over again!

Firstly, I thank my brilliant friend Patrick (who happens to be the drummer Will’s dad) for convincing me to go! Believe it or not, I was on the fence since we are now used to going three or four gigs at a time on tours. The Boisdale gig is a one off and it is of course wonderful if you live in London, or somewhere in Europe (short and cheap flights) but you need to factor in a lot in your decision if you fly from the US like me. The good news is that I could get my ticket with miles and Patrick gets a table for us. I tell my friends that I’m going and when they check they find out that the venue does not sell single tickets. And here is my Whatsapp exchange with Patrick when I share this information with him! Continue reading “Throwback Thursday to Damian Lewis at Boisdale of Canary Wharf”
