Damian Lewis’ Song of the Week: Down on the Bowery

“One stand-out highlight comes in ‘Down On The Bowery’, which effortlessly shows out the capability of Lewis’ voice and his commitment to the craft.” – Rolling Stone UK

Fan Fun’s Damian Lewis’ “Song of the Week” series has been getting a lot of love from the fandom — thank you all for the enthusiasm and support! If you missed any of the previous “Song of the Week” posts, you can catch up here.

This week, we’re diving into Damian Lewis’ first single, Down on the Bowery. Damian has shared what he intended with his debut album Mission Creep as follows:

“I wanted the album to give a sense of a journey to this point, from busking ‘til now. I suddenly had a lot to say. People will judge if it’s any good or not, but for me, it felt entirely natural.”

In chronological storytelling, Mission Creep takes us on a journey through Damian’s life and relationships. It begins with his busking years in Zaragoza, capturing the raw beginnings of his musical path. Then comes his first meeting with Helen in Soho Tango, and a song about her personality in Little One. The album also explores her dreams, as in Wanna Grow Old, reflecting her hope of growing old together in Paris. Later, Damian gets into loss and grief, with songs like Hole in My Roof, Makin’ Plans, and She Comes — each offering a deeply personal look at heartache and remembrance. Guitar Man: Damian Lewis’ Music Journey Part I

“I’m looking forward to getting out there and playing the songs I’ve written and been recording for my debut album. Be good to be back on stage, this time with a guitar in my hand.”

—Damian Lewis

You know what I did in the title, don’t you? If you know a certain ginger man who thinks he is the “second coming of Elvis” that is returning to stage with a guitar in hand, you go and title your related post after a lesser known Elvis gem.

So… if you are not living under a rock, you know that Damian returned to stage, this time, with a guitar in hand turning his fantasies into reality. He released a few singles in spring 2023 followed by his highly acclaimed first album ‘Mission Creep’ in June, and is already working a second album. He did live gigs in London, played at music festivals, rocked the paddock at the British Grand Prix, and went on a UK tour the second part of which is coming up in March.

Damian + Alison: Forces of Nature Collide (rated PG-13)

When I first heard Damian’s song Down on the Bowery (released April 13, 2023), it didn’t take long to figure out the song was about Alison and the history of their recurrent stays at The Bowery Hotel located at 333 The Bowery in New York City’s lower East Side. But what intrigued me more were certain lyrics that made my ears instantly perk up. Specifically, “blood on the walls in a siren city, your face all cut up but you looked so pretty.” What in the world could that be about, I wondered. I even tweeted to Damian about it back in April, 2023:

So… if you are not living under a rock, you know that Damian returned to stage, this time, with a guitar in hand turning his fantasies into reality. I have already reviewed his first three London gigs at Omeara, The Tabernacle and Hoxton Hall. Damian also took stage at Wilderness Festival, World Economic Forum in Davos and Cheltenham Jazz Festival. And not just that but he has already dropped three singles that you can hear/download: Down On the Bowery, Zaragoza, and Makin’ Plans. There is also a double-sided special 7-inch vinyl that he released on Record Store Day UK which you can order online now. Damian’s album Mission Creep is coming out on June 16 and you can pre-order it here. And it does not end there… Damian is scheduled to participate in the critically acclaimed song-writer sessions at Black Deer Festival on June 16, a stripped back set and signing of his record Mission Creep at Rough Trade East  in London, and his biggest gig to date at Union Chapel on July 11. I am sure more gigs will follow. You can visit our Damian Lewis Music Page to find out about Damian’s live gigs, ticket information, reviews and more.
