“Discovering” Damian Lewis through His Better Half: Martina and Heather’s Stories

Hello everyone! Damianista welcomes you to a NEW Fan Story Tuesday!

Most of us joined Damian Lewis fandom after seeing him in one of his major roles such as Major Winters in Band of Brothers or Nicholas Brody in Homeland. Sure, there are others that “found” him in less likely situations, say, when he played Laertes to Ralph Fiennes’ Hamlet on Broadway 22 years ago or when he hosted Have I Got New for You! And, today, we have two fans who noticed our favorite actor through his better half, beautiful and ridiculously talented Helen McCrory! So, without further ado, here is Martina and Heather sharing with us how they became Damian fans through Helen. ENJOY!

Fan Story Tuesday: Homeland is where the heart is

Home is where the heart is as the well-known phrase goes…or in this case Homeland is where the heart is. Brody is (unsurprisingly) proving to be a very popular jumping on point for Damian Lewis Fandom.

We continue our fan stories with a short collection of stories of how Sergeant Brody captured the attention and added a few more Damian Lewis fans to the count.

As you will see, some of these stories have been sitting with us a while – Louanne’s refers to getting ready to watch season 2 of Billions! The response by you all to the request for fan stories has been wonderful. If your story has not appeared on the blog yet, please do not be disheartened and be reassured we will get there! Thank you to you all for participating.

Damianista’s note: I am jumping in with apologies to my dear Tbkwrm who has prepared this post for publication. But I need to say a few words about the wonderful fans whose fan stories we are sharing today. While I have not had the pleasure of meeting Louanne on social media or in person, I am proud to call Hellie and Marie friends. Marie and I have had several Twitter exchanges over the past year and it was a pleasure to finally meet her in person at Billions LIVE at Paley Center last year. And even though I did not meet Hellie in person, we have shared A LOT on social media in particular about our love for 80s music! Both Hellie and I are Duranies but Hellie is first and foremost a Spandau Ballet girl. I kindly asked her to use the pic she uses for her Damian Lewis fan story 😀 Huge thanks go to all three for taking the time to share their stories with us and their constant support. Cheers!

“Damian’s not mortal, that’s not true”: Tiffany’s Story

Hello all! Damianista welcomes you to a NEW Fan Story Tuesday!

Today’s story comes from a woman with a BIG heart and a LOVELY smile whom I am proud to call a friend. Tiffany does A LOT to help all in need both in her professional life as a therapist and in her private life as an extremely caring and giving person. We are thrilled she has taken the time to share her wonderful fan story with us. Cheers!

Why Damian? Why is Damian special? Damian is exceptional at his craft, his depth of character is conveyed in each role he portrays. There’s a distinct level of realism that Damian achieves in each character that I’ve seen no other performer reach. As a therapist I am fascinated by his performance in Keane. So real to life that it was initially hard to watch. He captured the delicate balance of suffering, creativity and compassion that many with mental illness struggle to cope with in every day life. There are so many real Keanes and Damian gave each one of them a very real voice capturing flawlessly their humanity. Continue reading ““Damian’s not mortal, that’s not true”: Tiffany’s Story”

Brody in Homeland Season 6

When Brody died on Homeland, I was one of those fans who searched high and low, scrambling to find somewhere to talk about him and about the show. At one point I ended up on the Facebook page for Homeland and tried fruitlessly to sift thru all the flat “No Brody No Homeland” pointlessness to find someone who saw what I saw in the character and in the show. Brody will never die, I thought. So why rage into the void, begging for him to come back from the dead? Shows do listen to such things, I suppose. But, even if they did listen to all the pleas from fans, what would Brody come back for? To be a dad to his new daughter? To live happily ever after with Carrie? Really, fans?

No. Brody was dead. In fact, he was dead from the minute he got off the plane and saw Jess for the first time. I spoke at length of this aspect of the character before, here and here and here. The remarkable thing about the character was this very thing, that he was a dead man walking. A cipher, a mystery, an empty vessel filled with nothing except what various people put in his head. The fact that Damian played that emptiness so FULLY is the remarkable thing, the memorable thing, the thing that compels us to never let go of the character. Characters written so completely and played so fully never die, do they? The truth and the reality of Brody lives on and will never die.

How That Brief Cut to Brody’s Expression Did It: Nancy’s Story

Hello, everyone! Welcome to a new Fan Story Tuesday!

We have said time and again this blog has been a very rewarding experience and one major reward has been the beautiful friendships we have built over the almost two and a half years that we have been live. And Nancy is no exception. She and I “met” on Twitter and clicked almost immediately. And even though we “met” through our admiration for our favorite guy, an introduction to Nancy requires a mention of another guy whom you all probably know and admire, too: Roger Federer. Now, Nancy is a big Damian Lewis fan and you will truly love her story. Having said that she is first and foremost a Roger Federer fan. She does not only follow Roger’s career very closely but has also been extremely lucky to see some of his most important championships! And, yes, Nancy has a lovely big smile but I do not know if she ever smiled bigger than in this picture.

Nancy, I cannot tell you how lucky I feel to have met you and we cannot thank you enough for sharing your fan story with us. Cheers! Continue reading “How That Brief Cut to Brody’s Expression Did It: Nancy’s Story”
