Today’s story comes from Mel, a relatively recent fan of Damian, and a proud member of our very exclusive “Dark Horse” Club! In case you don’t know what I am talking about, here is Damian providing an explanation at Times Talks London back in 2014 😀

Well, even knowing Damian would not go out with us cannot stop us from loving Soames, would it, Mel? 😀

How did Damian Lewis Become Soames Forsyte? *UPDATED*

We talked about how Damian Lewis became Dick Winters earlier here. Dick Winters is not only the first “American” that Damian brought to life on screen, but it is also the role that made him an internationally known actor. Accordingly, after his big success in Band of Brothers, Damian was offered roles in Hollywood, including a part in Black Hawk Down which he turned down to do… Well… The Forsyte Saga! 

When asked in an interview with Now Magazine in 2001 about why he turned down Black Hawk Down, Damian Lewis jokingly says:

“I’d had enough of soldiering. Out of a cast of about 10,000, there was only one woman in Band of Brothers. So for my next job I wanted girls in it. Finding Damian Lewis on the Throne of England: Erica’s Story

The first time I saw Damian Lewis, he was playing a young King Henry VIII in “Wolf Hall”. Like a lot of British series, this one started off so subtle that I actually fell asleep during episode one. I was really annoyed with myself because I know that these shows start off quiet and reach a boiling point at the end- most American shows do just the opposite. I rewatched and was blown away by the intensity of Mark Rylance’s Thomas Cromwell and by the power of Damian Lewis’ Henry.
