TOP Damian Lewis Moments 2020:
Brody and Carrie Reunion at Variety’s Actors on Actors

“Danesy!!”

With that the Variety Actors On Actors segment featuring Damian Lewis and Claire Danes begins. She’s locked down in her New York apartment while he is roaming the English countryside in search of a signal. Thank God he found it! For the ensuing 34.05 minutes (with commercials 🙁  ugh) we are transported back to CarrieBrodyland.

Their friendship irl is as palpable as their chemistry was in Homeland Seasons 1-3. It’s remarkable to observe how closely Damian listens and how emotionally open Claire is with him.

“I missed you so much when you left…(S)eason 4 was about Carrie grieving the loss of Brody and I was grieving the loss of you. My friend.”

“You were great, Claire. Carrie did so many questionable things (but) You acted her without any sentimentality, any vanity!”

They spend a good deal of time talking about Billions, which Claire refers to as, “your robust afterlife.” She enjoys watching him play this Marvel (Comics) character and notes especially his physicality and sense of play.

“Billions is a study of men and their fathers. (It’s) pre-Freud. It’s Shakespearean. It must be played with an Avengers-like relish.”

“The dialog is so much fun to play!

“People love assholes being assholes.”

I think my favorite thing Damian says about Billions is

“It’s really a gangster show”

Claire’s achievement in completing Carrie Mathison’s story arc in the 8th and final season of Homeland , of course, is what brings the two actors together again. Damian congratulates her on “bringing it home” and asks if she was happy with how it worked out. Yes, she was. He adds

“It was great to be in it again!”

Claire replies that the twist of putting Carrie in Brody’s shoes was a natural unfolding.

“She’s always been tethered to you, to Brody and this was a way of acknowledging that.”

Of Brody Damian admits. “Poor Brody. I always felt sorry for Brody. He was always a victim in a larger game – always.”

I really loved watching them reminisce about working together on Homeland:

The “intense couple of days” filming The Weekend (S1 E7), meeting with Gansa and Michael Questa to “thread the needle” of who was playing whom and when.

Arguing in the trailer on set about the craft acting .

That time his sense of fun was not so appreciated during filming of The Weekend.

“You lost your shit with me!”

No, no you’ll have to watch to learn more!

The fact is, it’s so affirming to me to hear Claire Danes’  view of the relationship

“I, as Carrie, was always looking back to you, Brody. She has other ..relationships, sort of, but that was the central one… It was much more real than she had any awareness of.”

Sorry, baby.

I’ll give Mr. Lewis the last word.

“That’s the fun, isn’t it? You always remember the intensity. Homeland always felt so important.”

Watch for yourself! Do it for you!

  1. Did she forget that he punched her in season seven? He keeps her prisoner, drives her crazy and has a strange personality change in season 8, which I’m sure is just for her to work with this GRU spy, now does she really trust him? How can this work?
Contrary to sincerity with Brody, Saul and Quinn; it will never work.

    1. I didn’t like the ending because it was way too unrealistic. I don’t think Carrie’s changed. Yes she fell in love with Yevgeny but she’s still determined to do her job as a CIA agent. But the show, in my opinion, has undermined Yevgeny big time. He’s as good a spy as Carrie and I don’t think love would blind him at a level that he would not suspect anything about Carrie and what she may be up to. I think Brody coming back would be as realistic as the one we had!

      1. She hasn’t been a CIA agent since S3. Where her loyalties lie is unclear. I think we can rule out America Russia Yevgeny her family. Perhaps world peace/Saul? A private therefore satisfying agenda?

        1. My money is on Saul. She basically replaced the woman in Russia who helped Saul for decades and died in S8. So Carrie pays back.

          1. But did she replace Anna? Really? Carrie is under constant surveillance/monitoring. Anna was trusted. Carrie’s only “connection “ is ‘Geny and he is ruthless and smart. Other sources would be impossible to develop. Anna on the other hand was present at the operation of power in the Kremlin. Honestly I’ll never be convinced otherwise. It’s an emotional issue.

          2. I think she replaced Anna in her mind. I am not trying to convince you just voicing my own opinion. And I have no emotions when Carry is concerned. I’ve never been invested in her – only in her relationship with Brody.

    2. A comment by Linka Glatter on Carrie’s End (S8E12): “She may be the happiest we’ve ever seen, even though she’s living a lie – that’s the irony of it.” What does that mean?

      1. Carrie was not happy when she lived in the truth – as a CIA agent and beyond. She is now happy living a lie (she is with Yevgeny and she is happy but she is lying to him: she is not who Yevgeny thinks she is. She is still a spy).

        1. Is she happy with Yevgeny? like this?

And then end with Carrie in a long-term relationship with the guy who went rogue and killed many many people the previous season, took her off her meds, held her captive, got her to talk. They fall in-love?

When she’s not being interrogated, she sleeps all day, her body somehow knowing it finally has permission to rest. The combination of deep sleep and mostly empty days allow new memories from the asylum to resurface. Like her brain decided to regain lost territory. Most of them center around the brutal interrogations she endured when she was still half-way lucid, before she lost touch with reality entirely. They—at Yevgeny’s behest—did unspeakable things to her: starvation, sensory deprivation, filling her cell with photos of Franny, shackling her to a chair for weeks, among other things. Everything they could possibly do to accelerate her descent into madness.

Face to face with the man who gave her hell.

PS: With Marine One, the Queen of Drones was happy when she lived in truth – as a CIA agent and beyond. Peter Quinn also sparked love in kerry.
