Damian Lewis’ Song of the Week: She Comes

The record’s musical and emotional centerpiece, though, is She Comes, a gorgeous blend of folk and jazz in which Damian sings of a spirit inhabiting the living world – she comes as a blackbird, she comes as a fox, she sits at the window, she sings from a rock – over washes of rolling, Nick Drake-style piano.

Our Song of the Week series has been getting wonderful feedback from fans, and it has been a joy to see so many people revisiting the songs from Mission Creep along with us. In these posts, we take a closer look at one track at a time — diving into the lyrics, the performances, and the personal stories behind the songs. Many of the tracks on Damian Lewis’ debut album are deeply personal, and part of the fun is trying to piece together the experiences and emotions that may have inspired them. If you’ve missed any of the earlier entries in the series, you can catch up with all the previous Song of the Week posts here.

This week, we dive deep into “She Comes,” the first song Damian wrote for his debut album Mission Creep. The post is not only about the song itself but also about how Damian began his journey as a songwriter.

Damian Lewis’ Song of the Week: Makin’ Plans

Welcome back, everyone, to another Damian Lewis’ “Song of the Week” feature! I’m excited to share my thoughts on yet another track from Damian’s debut album Mission Creep. And this time, it’s one where Damian plugs in the electric guitar.

Let’s talk about Makin’ Plans.

But before we dive deep into it, if you missed earlier posts in our Song of the Week series, you can catch up here. Continue reading “Damian Lewis’ Song of the Week: Makin’ Plans”

Damian Lewis’ Song of the Week: Suck My Blood

It’s Damian Lewis’ Song of the Week time again — and this one feels particularly special. Because we now know,  thanks to a recent interview Damian gave to 9Honey, that his new singles will begin dropping in March, with the full album set for release in June. And this track, Suck My Blood, is one of the new originals we are really hoping makes the album cut. It has already been released on The Radleys soundtrack — but it absolutely deserves a second life on album two.

So today, we’re diving into it.

Here is how Damian introduced his new song “Suck My Blood” to us on Instagram just in time for Halloween in 2023. And then, during the second leg of his Mission Creep UK tour in spring 2024, he brought it to the stage for the first time.

Before performing it, he told us about The Radleys, the vampire film he had recently completed, in which he plays a small-town doctor. He explained how the song was inspired by the film and his role in it. And in Stroud, he absolutely brought the house down when he spotted a man in the front row getting up — presumably for the bar or the loo — and deadpanned:

“Sir, I’m not a real vampire.”

Classic Damian. Perfect timing. People couldn’t stop laughing. Continue reading “Damian Lewis’ Song of the Week: Suck My Blood”

Damian Lewis’ Song of the Week: Pentonville Prison

“I was riding home one night on my motorbike. I was in North London. I was on Caledonian Road. I was outside Pentonville Prison. Next thing I knew was I was flying through the air and going straight to the windscreen of a car. This is called Pentonville Prison.” – Damian Lewis

We can’t wait for Damian Lewis’ second album sometime this spring, and one of the songs we’re really rooting to see on the album is Pentonville Prison. We’ll be diving into that track this week in Damian Lewis’ Song of the Week series.

And before we get into it, if you missed any of the previous Song of the Week posts, you can find them all here.

Now, Pentonville is an actual prison on Caledonian Road in Barnsbury, North London. But don’t worry—the track isn’t about Damian doing time. Instead, it’s inspired by a motorbike accident he had right outside the prison many years ago. Continue reading “Damian Lewis’ Song of the Week: Pentonville Prison”

Damian Lewis’ Song of the Week: Never Judge A Man By His Umbrella

Trust is hard to come by. Honesty is in short supply. Trump is back on Twitter… This song is about secrets, lies, and spies…
