The album Sweet Chaos captures a more expansive and dynamic sound than Damian’s debut album Mission Creep. The album came together following a turning point collaboration with Guy Chambers, whose work helped reshape the project . The partnership brought a renewed clarity and focus to the material, with Damian crediting Chambers’ experience and honesty as pivotal to the album’s direction.
Written with live performance in mind, Sweet Chaos unfolds on a sweeping, cinematic scale, built around the idea of a life disrupted by chaos. Sweet Chaos feels immediate and immersive…an album that embraces unpredictability where moments of upheaval give way to something unexpectedly powerful, liberating, and transformative. Damian’s continued evolution as a songwriter is evident.
From the brooding, blues-infused opener ‘No Man’s Land’ to the swaggering pop-funk storytelling of ‘Pentonville Prison’ and the anthemic pull of ‘Traffic Jam,’ Sweet Chaos explores themes of love, loss, frustration, and release. ‘Leech’ is a sharp indie-rock critique of media intrusion, ‘Question Mark’ is haunting and intimate, and the closing track ‘Fix Me Up’ is electrifying.

Gingersnap’s Top 3:
Song Number 1: King – King is my favorite song by Damian ever! EVER! Songs can have many different interpretations based on who the listener is. It is up to the listener to decide what it means for them. This is my take, and even mine vacillates.
Could King refer to Jesus or God? Afterall, followers have conjured pillars and columns of marble for him; built golden halls for him; constructed walls around those pillars, columns, and halls to create houses of worship. This King who stands like a vision is revered, then caged…trapped in those very four walls meant to give one liberation. All alone. In the dark. No one sees him on his throne. The marble palace is a prison. The same believers who “showed him the reason,” walled him inside it. Feels like he is serving a sentence, yet continues to reach for freedom he will never grasp.
Could the song be about a soul meeting its maker on the final journey to glory? That the maker is showing the soul everything he built for them atop a hill with a heavenly view? That death is not finite, but comes with freedom and the ability to fly and touch the sky? Yet this afterlife, too, comes pre-designed by someone else’s hands.
Regardless, the song is brilliant. The hook is catchy. It just flows.
Fun Fact: Damian used his daughter Manon’s puppet artwork she calls “Mr. Yellow” for the King release.

Song Number 2: Traffic Jam – Traffic Jam is my second favorite song from the Sweet Chaos album. Damian has been playing Traffic Jam since his Mission Creep tour. When I heard it for the first time 2-3 years ago from a video Damianista sent me from tour, I immediately replied to her saying, “It sounds like Bowie. He’s used a snippet of Bowie.” Fast forward to June of 2026 and Damian shared with audience members at his album launch signings about the David Bowie connection, validating that I was not hearing things!
“Those of you who know their music will recognize a motif in the middle of this.”
Damian shared that he contacted Bowie’s estate for permission to use the ‘Space Oddity’ reference.
Bowie: “Here am I floating ’round my tin can. Far above the moon. Planet Earth is blue and there’s nothing I can do.”
Damian: “Here am I, I’m just sitting in my tin can and I’m stuck in another stupid traffic jam.”
I love the tempo of the song and the lyrics crack me up. From grinds blocking his coffee maker and stepping in fox poop, to locking oneself (plus dog Petra) out of the house and noticing his garden of wilted flowers.
“So now I’m stuck outside on the road with my stinky lil’ bitch!” LOL!!! 😉

Song Number 3: Leech– Leech is my third favorite song from the album Sweet Chaos. To me, the musicality of the song begins and ends with almost a country twang sound. Damian sings the majority of the lyrics in what I would call song-rap. Then he slows it all down when he repeats “you’re a leech, you’re a leech, you’re a leech…” not unlike how Radiohead slows it down with their song ‘Creep.’
The song explores media intrusion into the private lives of celebrities. I imagine this scenario happened when Damian met a reporter for an interview in a public location, as he usually does, and he felt pounced upon and targeted about his recent family tragedy and grief. I can’t help but think of that Radio Times reporter who recently pissed off Damian so much, that he left the interview.

Damianista’s Top 3:
Choosing only three songs from Sweet Chaos is incredibly difficult because I love all of them for completely different reasons. However, after listening to the album for a million times, I think I have three clear winners!
Song Number 1: Traffic Jam
Traffic Jam is my favorite song on the album because it is so wonderfully relatable. Damian describes it as a song about “sweet thoughts on a shitty day,” and every one of us has had days like that.
His dog rolls in fox poop. His neighbors are making too much noise. He forgets his keys in the kitchen and locks himself out of the house. Is there anybody who hasn’t done something similar? You have sweet plans, but then one silly mistake makes it impossible to do what you wanted, and you simply have to deal with it.
The earlier live version also included terrible global news—a school shooting and January 6—adding to the general awfulness of the day. As a political person, I actually loved those references, although I understand why they may have been removed to tighten the song around one person’s everyday chaos.
I want to make one thing clear. Damian has mentioned at his Sweet Chaos launch tour that everybody would recognize a motif in the song, and I know it’s Bowie, but that is not why the song speaks to me. I have never been a huge Bowie fan – I spent the 1980s listening to boy bands. I love my Duran Duran! 😀
For me, Traffic Jam wins because of its beautiful music and very human message: sweet thoughts can still come to rescue even on a completely shitty day 🙂 Oh, and then there is Damian’s delivery. I am not sure I can even put into words what makes it so funny, but he delivers the lyrics with perfect deadpan humor. He sings about one minor disaster after another with an almost straight face, and somehow that makes every detail even funnier. Traffic Jam shows Damian’s playful side and I absolutely adore it.
Finally, Petra, Damian’s dog, being in the song makes me HAPPY as a fellow pet human!
Song Number 2: No Man’s Land
No Man’s Land, formerly called Love Bomb, immediately gave me 1980s electronica vibes. I fell in love with it the first time Damian played it during the second leg of the Mission Creep UK tour. It was one of those songs that stayed with me even though I couldn’t get all the lyrics—as usual, I needed the album to be released before I could finally understand them!
Damian describes No Man’s Land as a “love is war kind of song,” and that is exactly what makes it so compelling. Love is expressed through battlefields, defenses and damaged armor:
“My defenses were weak, you tore my armor apart.”
Changing the title from Love Bomb to No Man’s Land made that central idea even stronger, I think. It is not merely about the explosive force of falling in love, but also about the uncertain territory between two people who have lowered their defenses.
The new album arrangement turns the song into an incredible duet between Damian and Alison. I was lucky enough to see them perform it together at St John’s in Kingston, and their chemistry was off the charts. Two people in love, duetting about love as war… Love sparkles all around, I’m telling you!
I really hope audiences will have the opportunity to see Alison join Damian onstage during the Sweet Chaos UK tour this fall. The recording is terrific, but witnessing the two of them perform it together adds another layer of meaning. It’s MAGICAL.
Song Number 3: King
King is possibly the coolest song Damian has ever written. It is a collaboration with Guy Chambers: Damian provided the lyrics, while Chambers made the music. It’s atmospheric, theatrical, and mysterious. It makes you wonder who this King is.
The song begins in an almost storybook world of marble, pillars, golden halls and heavenly views. It initially feels hopeful and encouraging. Someone is being elevated and told that, although he may be crawling now, one day he will fly:
“You’re destined to go further,
Wild horses can’t stop you.”
Then everything changes:
“They showed him Elysium,
But then they built the walls.”
In ancient Greek mythology, Elysium was a paradise—a place reserved for heroes and the blessed after death. So the promise could not be more beautiful: they show him paradise and allow him to glimpse the freedom and greatness he will have. But it is a trick. As soon as they reveal the heaven, they build walls around him and take that freedom away. So, Everything designed to elevate this person also traps him.
“All alone and in the dark,
No one sees him on his throne.”
The marble pillars and golden halls may be beautiful, but they become part of his prison, confining him inside a role he may never have chosen. He is admired, elevated and maybe even envied by others but he is completely alone. From inside the walls, he can still look up and see the stars, but he can’t touch them.
Damian recommends listening to King with bourbon on the rocks, and that feels exactly right. This is not a song to rush. It sounds smooth at first, but then the ideas about false promises, isolation and the price of becoming someone begin to hit. King is a song you need to sit with—and then immediately play again 🙂
Honorable Mention: Leech
Damian has described his second album as louder, bigger and angrier than Mission Creep. I completely agree—and if there is one song that carries the album’s anger the most, it is Leech.
Even the lyrics are hard to sing. They are loaded, the pace is relentless, and the words come so quickly that they can be hard to catch. That urgency suits the subject perfectly: the cruel intrusion of the paparazzi into someone’s private life, particularly when that person is grieving.
I find it deeply distasteful when people who call themselves “journalists” approach grieving celebrities, wait outside their homes, photograph them and try to make them speak publicly about their loss. Grief should never be treated as entertainment.
During the Sweet Chaos pre-album listening party, Damian explained that Leech came out of a particularly unpleasant encounter with someone who approached him in “raincoat smiles.” Damian felt deeply betrayed by the experience—and you can hear that betrayal, as well as his anger, throughout the song.
The line
“Then you start in on my wife
who just lost her fucking life
Start pleasuring yourself with grief porn”
hits especially hard.
The “raincoat smile” is the deceptive, slimy charm of a “leech” pretending to be a friend just to sell a story for “thirty pieces” of silver. Perfect lyrics.
I sincerely hope the “leech” hears the song, recognizes himself as its main character and—if he is capable of feeling such a thing—experiences at least a little shame.
Monique’s Top 3:
Song Number 1: Pentonville Prison
No surprise there for the ones who know me. This is my favorite song since I got to know it, the very first time Damian played it at Union Chapel in London. The song was called fate then, later Damian changed it to Pentonville prison. When I listen to a song, the first thing I register is the music, the lyrics come in later. And at the time, I didn’t even know the lyrics.
The song is about an accident Damian had, when he was driving home one evening on his motorbike and was thrown into the windshield of a mini cab. The accident happened on Caledonian road, near Pentonville prison. An off duty male nurse who sat in the mini cab provided first aid. Thankfully it all ended well.
I loved the song from the start. You sometimes have that with a song, you like it right away and you can listen to it a million times and still like it. I think the change in pace right to the chorus is brilliant. He made a beautiful song about a terrible event, these lyrics say it all:
I lay facedown, split crown, half drowned in the rain
An angel held my hand, the helmet held my brain
Song Number 2: King
This song has a bit of a dramatic feel to it, at least for me. It’s a song that has depth. Reviewing the lyrics, I wonder what the song is really about. For me it seems that someone is on the verge of becoming famous, is encouraged to make it in the world. He is meant to be out there, but on his way to the top, there are walls that separate you from the world. If you make it all the way up there, I can imagine it can be a lonely place.
They built him pillars and columns

They showed him Elysium
But then they built the walls
Is it about finding freedom in a world where you are controlled in a way because people have expectations and you need to fulfill them? Or you can’t do anything without everyone judging you and expressing their opinion about you? And probably wants something from you, or are always looking for a story to sell. (I think that’s where the song Leech comes in). I imagine if you live a life in the spotlights, everything you do is noticed, talked about and written about. Where is room for freedom in that?
Song Number 3: Traffic Jam
Where King has a dramatic feel to it, Traffic jam is funny. This song makes you smile and is so relatable. Sometimes you have those little annoyances (and sometimes big ones) that happen to you. He tells it so vividly that I can almost see him standing outside his house with his stinky dog.

So now I’m stuck outside on the road with my stinky lil’ bitch
I also like the influence of Bowie in this song. The tin can caught my attention when I heard the song the first time. Where one is stuck in a tin can floating in space, the other is stuck in a traffic jam on earth. It both feels like you’re trapped and can’t get out of.
Here I am, I’m just sitting in my tin can
And I’m stuck in another stupid traffic jam
When these annoyances happen to you, you have to hold on to a happier thought.
I ain’t afraid of the dark because I know the days are so bright
Follow the cracking kind and you’ll find a dream of you and me

Song Number 1: No Man’s Land
I love the mood of this song. It’s intense, emotional, and the duet with Alison Mosshart works really well.
Song Number 2: King
I love how powerful this song feels without trying too hard. It’s simple, honest, and beautifully written.

The lyrics are what make this song so special to me. They’re honest, emotional, and really stay with you.

Song Number 1: Sweet Chaos
When I heard Sweet Chaos for the first time in Ireland, I immediately fell in love deeply and irreversibly. Then I couldn’t catch all the lyrics. I called it The Celtic Hymn because of the extra Celtic vibes the brilliant Una Palisser gave. After the Ireland gigs I’ve listened to it a thousand times.
Every song is a whole show and when we listen, we actually take a part in it. This one is a stunning show. I’ll try to put in few words how my part looks like.
Ton ton ton, Ton ton ton ….. The guitar dances a waltz trough its intro chords. The way his voice moves from his normal voice into falsetto and back again, as he tells the story in the verse, feels like a tender lullaby for the soul.
Then comes the chorus and I realise that it’s actually a wake up song, but still so pleasant, even more.
Then comes the second verse, and hooooo -someone blows on a dandelion…
“And they jumped and tumbled
And laughed and they sang
Untethered unbound
Free to a man”
As my teacher likes to say, when you go to a concert, you’re treating your soul to a visit to a pastry shop. When the saxophone comes in and I listen to all the layers the instruments are building, it is exactly the same. I find myself in a heavenly pastry shop. You want to taste this, then that one, then another. A stunning sweetness all around..
And then when “The trees roared…” starts, my soul takes flight and lands a septuple Axel, ( just like I’ve always wanted to). It is euphoric.
Just when I think it can’t get any more beautiful, the violin comes – what a beauty!
When I finally got the lyrics (And what lyrics they are !!! To turn a crisis and the unimaginable into such beautiful, vivid metaphors! I love it when the heaven pours so much talent on someone.), they(the lyrics) just outlined the contours of what the music had already told me. That’s the universal language of music.
“But oh no no no[….] Now he knows.” – I can listen to that final part forever… It gives me a soothing sense of humility.
I obviously can write a short novel about it:D
Song Number 2: Advent
What to say?? What a song!!! I just want to dance my ass off! I’ve listened to it live. What a jam!! What a blast!!!
Song Number 3: King
Because I’m a stubborn know-it-all, and like all know-it-all people, I had prejudices, now I just can’t stop singing it. I adore the cantering rhythm. I adore the melody. I adore the storytelling and the sense of mystery in this song. Many thanks to karma!
