Do it Like Damian Lewis: HELP Raise Awareness for EB on Rare Disease Day!

Today is Rare Disease Day, a day to raise awareness about rare diseases and the impact they have on patients’ lives. The primary target of the campaign is the general public; however, it is very important to raise awareness among policy makers, researchers, health professionals and anyone who has an interest in rare diseases. And we would like to take this opportunity to raise awareness as well as funds to find a cure for EB, one of about 7,000 rare diseases for which there is no cure.

Well, most of you know Damian Lewis is a proud patron of Cure EB.

The kids that are born with Recessive Dystropic Epidermolysis Bullosa (RDEB) or EB for short lack the protein that holds their skin together. They have extremely fragile skin that they are sometimes called “butterfly children.” Lots of activities we take for granted as easy routines in our daily lives are a struggle for them. Can you imagine a day where your dressing up takes up to two hours and eating and drinking cause blisters in your mouth and throat? These kids have to deal with this kind of pain every single day. Besides, they are under extra risk to develop skin cancer later in life and their life expectancy is not very long. Throwback Thursday to Damian Lewis in “Lift Me Up I am Dying”

“Severn-I–lift me up–I am dying–I shall die easy–don’t be frightened–be firm, and thank God it has come!”

John Keats

If there had been no Covid pandemic, they would have marked the 200th anniversary of John Keats’ death with a new production of the play Lift Me Up I am Dying in the house that Keats died – now the Keats-Shelley House  in Rome. But when it was clear that a live performance would not be possible, the creator Pele Cox came up with an alternative: she would have Zoom meetings with the actors who happened to be in lockdown and then let them  film themselves and bring to life a half-hour film based on the last weeks of Keats’ life. And they did.

This week marks the 205th anniversary of John Keats’ death and we re-visit the intimate virtual performance Damian gives in Lift Me Up I am Dying.

Damian Lewis’ Song of the Week: Suck My Blood

It’s Damian Lewis’ Song of the Week time again — and this one feels particularly special. Because we now know,  thanks to a recent interview Damian gave to 9Honey, that his new singles will begin dropping in March, with the full album set for release in June. And this track, Suck My Blood, is one of the new originals we are really hoping makes the album cut. It has already been released on The Radleys soundtrack — but it absolutely deserves a second life on album two.

So today, we’re diving into it.

Here is how Damian introduced his new song “Suck My Blood” to us on Instagram just in time for Halloween in 2023. And then, during the second leg of his Mission Creep UK tour in spring 2024, he brought it to the stage for the first time.

Before performing it, he told us about The Radleys, the vampire film he had recently completed, in which he plays a small-town doctor. He explained how the song was inspired by the film and his role in it. And in Stroud, he absolutely brought the house down when he spotted a man in the front row getting up — presumably for the bar or the loo — and deadpanned:

“Sir, I’m not a real vampire.”

Classic Damian. Perfect timing. People couldn’t stop laughing. Continue reading “Damian Lewis’ Song of the Week: Suck My Blood”

On the Horizon: Damian Lewis as Montgomery in WWII Movie “Pressure” *UPDATED*

Band of Brothers opens at Upottery Airfield on June 4, 1944, as the Easy Company paratroopers make their final preparations for their highly-awaited Normandy jump. The men of Easy Company are clearly disappointed when the commanding officer, 1st Lieutenant Thomas Meehan III, shows up to announce that the jump has been delayed due to bad weather.

Easy Company, listen up! Gather up around me. Move it up, come on, gentlemen, let’s go! Now, the Channel coast is socked in with rain and fog, high winds on the drop zone. No jump tonight. The invasion has been postponed. We’re on a 24 hour stand down.

As the men grumble about the delay, we meet 1st Lieutenant Richard Winters and 2nd Lieutenant Lewis Nixon. The two men talk about their time together as they expect further announcements. Towards the end of the first episode, there is an exchange about the weather between the two. Continue reading “On the Horizon: Damian Lewis as Montgomery in WWII Movie “Pressure” *UPDATED*”
