Throwback Thursday to Damian Lewis in Pillars of the Community

This post was originally written in 2016. With Damian set to star in Jack of Spades alongside Lesley Manville, it feels like the perfect moment to share it again. Enjoy!

It all began when a dear colleague—someone who shares my deep love for theatre—asked me to name my favorite male and female stage performances of 2015. Easy.

So what was it about these performances that made me fall in love with them?

One word: precision.

Then I thought about the heart-breaking performance Lesley Manville gives in Ghosts which, in fact, brought her an Olivier Award in 2014 (I saw the play later when it visited Brooklyn Academy of Music in 2015). I know Manville mostly from her work on big screen such as Secrets and Lies (1996), Vera Drake (2004), Another Year (2010) and Mr Turner (2014) all of which were some of my favorites in the year they were released. But I really did not know about her stage work. So I googled her.

Damian Lewis’ Song of the Week: Down on the Bowery

Fan Fun’s Damian Lewis’ “Song of the Week” series has been getting a lot of love from the fandom — thank you all for the enthusiasm and support! If you missed any of the previous “Song of the Week” posts, you can catch up here.

This week, we’re diving into Damian Lewis’ first single, Down on the Bowery. Damian has shared what he intended with his debut album Mission Creep as follows:

“I wanted the album to give a sense of a journey to this point, from busking ‘til now. I suddenly had a lot to say. People will judge if it’s any good or not, but for me, it felt entirely natural.”

In chronological storytelling, Mission Creep takes us on a journey through Damian’s life and relationships. It begins with his busking years in Zaragoza, capturing the raw beginnings of his musical path. Then comes his first meeting with Helen in Soho Tango, and a song about her personality in Little One. The album also explores her dreams, as in Wanna Grow Old, reflecting her hope of growing old together in Paris. Later, Damian gets into loss and grief, with songs like Hole in My Roof, Makin’ Plans, and She Comes — each offering a deeply personal look at heartache and remembrance. Damian Lewis in Jack of Spades: A First Look

In July 2025, I got an email from a man who owns a gym in a small Scottish town, and it turned out to be more interesting than I expected. The subject line read: “Re: Use of Gym facilities.” He explained that word had gone around that Damian Lewis and the cast of a new production were looking for a private place to work out while filming in Argyll. He described his gym in Lochgilphead as “well-appointed” and able to offer “privacy and anonymity,” and said the only thing they would ask in return was a small photo opportunity when time allowed.

At that point, I had no idea what production he was talking about. We knew that Damian had finished filming The Runner – another movie we will talk about in ” A First Look” post soon – but nothing else had been announced yet. I simply forwarded the email to Damian’s PA and moved on.

Later that summer, photos began circulating of Damian with an ambitious moustache (this one from his weekend at the Latitude festival with Alison late July) and a distinctly period look.
