JaniaJania gave us a wonderful “Carrie and Brody: Was It Love?” series covering every single scene with Carrie and Brody in Homeland Season 1 followed by a discussion between NotLinda, a wonderful reader and an occasional Fan Fun contributor, and herself. And now we are thrilled to leave the stage to NotLinda for her to give us Carrie and Brody in Season 2. We MISSED them, didn’t we?
Welcome to an examination of the relationship between Damian Lewis’ Brody and Claire Danes’ Carrie traveled in Season 2 of HOMELAND. It’s a wild ride with hairpin turns. However, as importantly, this season is a mesmerizing character study of Nicholas Brody. The character is pulled by opposing, coerced, and uncontrollable forces. The repercussions of his commitment to Abu Nazir, the unexpected bond to his family, and his deal with CIA. At the top of his game, I’ve never seen Damian so compelling. After the short bucolic break from reality, both Brody and Carrie have melded back into a plot prancing along apace.
Brody is called into Langley to tell Saul about Tom Walker. He’s tense and frustrated having to answer the same questions again. He sees Carrie and he cringes. True, he believes that he’s been called in because Carrie shared his confession to her that he killed Walker. It’s a “dammit, there she is” wince. He wants to ignore her, and maybe he was hoping he wouldn’t run into her there. But, maybe he was hoping he would, and he’s recoiling at his own stupidity over still wanting to see her after what she did (i.e. what he thinks she did). “Dammit, there she is” can mean a variety of things, can’t it? Whatever the case may be, his eyes keep going back to her.
“You live in despair for eight years; you can turn to religion, too. And, the King James Bible was not available.” – Nicholas Brody
I was born and raised in a secular family in Turkey, a country that is predominantly Muslim. That is, even though I am not religious myself, I am very familiar with the Islamic traditions, rituals and norms. I am obviously coming out of the culture and have been shaped by it in ways that I am probably not aware of 🙂 Thus, I thought it would be neat to talk about Nicholas Brody, my most favorite fictional character ever on small screen, as a Muslim character in celebration of Ramadan!
“Why does Jessica Brody call her husband by his last name?”
Believe it or not, this is one of the most commonly asked questions by Homeland as well as Damian Lewis fans.
And it’s not just that fans are curious about the reason behind Jessica calling her husband by his last name but also they are quite opinionated about it. Some find it sweet, some find it weird, some find it inexplicable and I have even seen some finding it distasteful 🙂 But whatever the reason is, it is what it is. He is Brody and not Nick for us 🙂 If you think about it, the only people in the show that call Brody as Nick are the Waldens and the only person that calls him as Nicholas is Abu Nazir. All dead. First things first: Many thanks go to my partner Bookworm for inspiring me to write this post. She, more than a month ago, posted a lovely fan fiction in which she imagined Jess and Brody’s wedding day! And she got me thinkin’… She got me thinking about the “other” love story in Homeland that we never really witnessed except for little bits and pieces…
Jessica and Nicholas Brody… A beautiful couple united by love and separated by war… High school sweethearts… They start dating at 16 and get married probably in their early 20s… They have a simple, yet happy life: A house. A car. Probably a mortgage. Two beautiful kids. Football and BBQ on the weekend. Your picture-perfect American family… Well… until life happens… Continue reading “The “Other” Love Story in Homeland: Nicholas and Jessica Brody”
